Rushall: A sustainable garden for enjoyment

LGA: Yarra

STATUS: Complete

BUDGET: $50K

When I first saw it, the garden was completely trashed due to a major renovation. Working with the client, I sketched out a concept design in line with their priorities and lifestyle. Important elements included sustainable materials, water capture, permeable surfaces, space for productive gardening, bird and insect attracting plants and beauty.

Between June and August 2020, some of the major elements of the garden began to take shape. Planting will take place in Autumn 2021.

Plants were selected to suit a range of micro climates created by aspect of the site as well as fences and buildings overshadowing the garden. The soil is poor and compacted and species needed to be hardy to possible drought and were chosen to attract birds and insects to the garden.
